The wine year 2024

We winegrowers are very attached to nature. Because we love working with it and because it forms the basis of our livelihood. The resulting challenges make life exciting, not always easy, but often happy. After all, we vinify our wine the way we like to drink it ourselves. We all know that nature has to play along and that we must not play with nature, and as winegrowers in Vulkanland Steiermark we can count ourselves lucky.

In 2024, we were able to draw from the full. The year brought plenty of rain, lots of sunshine, and, in the finale, the most condensed harvest of all time. For many years, the harvest period here lasted over a month, but in 2023 the grapes were in the cellar in 17 days and this year, after the start of the harvest on August 29, they were even harvested in just 13 days. You have to plan extremely well, but nature is still our friend.

We look forward to seeing you in our
farm store in Karbach.

Willi Balanjuk, A LA CARTE, about our 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Ried Buch (99 P.):
"Bright color, intense, complex nose, dark spicy notes, verbena, candied orange, lemon balm, pimentos, full-bodied, dense and tightly meshed, lively structure, fruity-spicy finish, verbena and mint in the aftertaste, elderflower in the back aroma, huge potential."

So schön! Stephan Reinhardt schrieb für den
Robert Parker Wine Advocat, September 2022:
"The Weißburgunder Ried Buch GSTK 2020 shows clear, elegant fruit with oak and yeasty notes and deep mineral substance. Delicate and elegant on the palate, with juicy fruit, this is a firmly structured, dense and persistent Pinot Blanc with fine tannins and lingering mineral, salty, savory notes and always lively structure. Great Pinot Blanc."

Peter Moser has summed up the characteristics of our wine-growing region in a nutshell (an excerpt):
"The wines of south-eastern Styria are clearly on course for success: this is confirmed by the Falstaff "Vulkanland Steiermark DAC Trophy 2021", in which white wine winners were recognized in eleven categories. Diversity is of paramount importance in the Vulkanland Steiermark wine-growing region and is anything but a buzzword here. Here, the vineyards are spread over many areas, some of which are not contiguous, and on soils of a geological diversity that cannot be found in any other wine-growing region in Austria."

Selected Press Voices

Stephan Reinhard, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
“The 2017 Ried Buch Weissburgunder is produced from a clay basalt and reveals a clear, fresh and elegant, perfectly matured and flintily spicy basalt bouquet. Velvety, linear, fresh and very elegant on the palate; this is a compact, excitingly lean, moderately vigorous Pinot with clear and refreshing fruit notes, though the music here comes exclusively from its soul (the ground).”

Sauvignon Blanc Privat 2013: “Tasted out of a large glass (...), this is a powerful, highly complex, robust and salty, very lean and concentrated Sauvignon, that belongs to the high points of Styrian history. It is so salty, pure and exciting. A magnificent wine.”

2017 Straden Morillon Trockenbeerenauslese (sweet wine specialty): (...) “Tremendously rich and sophisticated elegant on the palate, this is a viscose, refined, extremely subtle and stimulating salty TBA, with an aftertaste that is balanced, fresh and stimulatingly clean. This is a spectacularly hedonistic TBA (...) a world-class sweet wine from Styria.”

”Walter Frauwallner has made a name for himself, not least through his sweet wines and is undoubtedly one of the sharpest producers in the province when it comes to Eiswein and TBA.”
